But rest assured, I've been busy in the crafting department as well.<br />
<br />
Since my last post I had a spring trade show... not much to say about that, but I'm really looking forward to the December 7 Christmas trade show that I've signed up for. So far it looks like those will be my only 2 shows for the year so I'm hoping to start working up more product for that show and for my Etsy shop.<br />
<br />
I joined an 'Around the World' swap and made a mini-Chrisie that I sent on. The swap involves hosting a revolving group of mini's and showing them around and making them presents and whatnot. Unfortunately my mini has been 'lost' as it's currently stuck at a swap person's house that's having personal problems and not moving the mini's along. One of the members of the group has made me an Angel traveller and is sending her on to the next person so we can continue the fun. Hopefully my mini comes back to me eventually.<br />

I've started unravelling sweaters for yarn... and I made a shawl from the first one.<br />

And I've been knitting! I'm just making dishcloths right now, but I've signed up for a few Craftsy courses that should help me make the things I want - hats, toys, socks, garments etc. I'm really enjoying making the dishcloths though, it's a perfect travel project.<br />

I have a trade show booked for May 4, so I'm trying to get lots of fun spring and Mother's Day appropriate items. Here's a few things I've made so far...<br />

My lovely mother-in-law was very interested in what I was working on yesterday... plarn. <br />
<br />
Plarn is when you cut up plastic bags and basically make them into yarn.<br />
<br />
There are lots of places online to get tutorials on how to make your own plarn, but here is the process I used.<br />

<br />
I'm still working on the bag, but it should be an interesting experiment. Google 'plarn' and you will find tons of different things made with it. Including sandals, which I thought was interesting, but I don't think I'll be trying. So far, I think I'm going to try to make different bags. I think plarn would make nice beach bags, market bags and laundry bags. I'll post an update when I'm finished my current bag.<br />
<br />
If this works out, I might send out a call to my friends to bring me their unwanted bags... some of the big projects can take over 150 bags. :)Chrisiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755562287677532073noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8675770610038798275.post-78742505323866791922012-08-12T21:08:00.000-07:002012-08-12T21:09:16.293-07:00The Ravellenic GamesThe Ravellenic Games are a just-for-fun yarn competition through my favourite site Ravelry. You compete in 'events' such as "Scarf Hockey" and "Homestuff Hammerthrow"... making the appropriate items during the games and receiving virtual medals. It's a fun way for over 12,000 people to knit, crochet, spin and dye yarn together. It runs concurrently with the Olympics... July 27-Aug 12.<br />
<br />
You can also be on a team.. I'm on two teams. Team PlanetJune and Team Vaginal Fantasy (bookclub).<br />
<br />
Here are my finished items...<br />
<br />

The only thing I didn't get to finish was my Tunisian Purse... but my main goal for that was to learn the stitches and I did, so I'm still happy. I'll finish it eventually. :)<br />
<br />Chrisiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755562287677532073noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8675770610038798275.post-27462001930618335422012-07-11T13:02:00.002-07:002012-08-12T21:09:24.348-07:00So I've been a busy bee this past month or so trying to get ready for my first trade show and then to get my first big design finished to enter into the Stampede Visual Arts showcase.<br />
<br />
PlanetJune's Ravelry group has a Crochet-A-Long or CAL every month where people make things according to the theme chosen that month. In June it was a free-choice of all of PlanetJune's patterns, and it was extended to July 15 because we will be doing another CAL-type thing with the Ravelry Ravellenic Games (a just for fun competition that runs during the Olympics) from July 27 - Aug 12.<br />
<br />
So, I made a ton of things during this month... my items will probably make up almost half of the CAL entries this time around. I'll link or share PJ's blog post when it goes up later in the month.<br />
<br />
Anyone who is on FB or Ravelry with me knows the trade show is all I've talked about for the whole month of June pretty much, so here's the final result...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7XrPtuymSPoPVebRU898OH3lNo8J00NhCYtPGjNOdqQOeE1IndVuvTHnO4PGzQRV6MCO3lPxrEr_4HdMuCfBxFprm9ur9GacFJYZQiZVCLpNnrY_MLrQX-lT22dJX3XZFaD-AB0scXgKb/s1600/100_8676+small.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7XrPtuymSPoPVebRU898OH3lNo8J00NhCYtPGjNOdqQOeE1IndVuvTHnO4PGzQRV6MCO3lPxrEr_4HdMuCfBxFprm9ur9GacFJYZQiZVCLpNnrY_MLrQX-lT22dJX3XZFaD-AB0scXgKb/s320/100_8676+small.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I had 70 items total for sale, and I sold 5. But, I consider it a success and it was a fun day, so I signed up for the August 4th show. At least I'll have lots of stock ready! I had a couple of requests for things I didn't have, so I'll be making a few more things and hopefully those people will swing by the table again.<br />
<br />
After that was over I turned to my biggest challenge yet, to design my own project. I settled on an octopus because it's kind of steampunk-y, which I like and I have ideas to add accessories to it during the Ravellenic Games for my VF Team (book club).<br />
<br />
The deadline for the design was July 10, so I really only had a couple of days to make it. I'd sketched and had plans in my head, but it's hard for me to visualize without actually doing it. So I just started... and I frogged (ripped it out to the start)... and started again... frogged... started... frogged... started and <em>finally</em> found a shape I liked. Then I moved on to the arms.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLMyLhAKru-pkFUyN9AmcJkHhKJfJZssmYGYQ2peLKWCUXLiptuuXk6bNysOnTIXAUgbXMygjIeUcaRhzJTzP9Urp5B97Qz3xSgnz_hnYvuwrtqpgTxvWSRAqSVZcYThNJ4wvKliEYnRbz/s1600/100_8679+small.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLMyLhAKru-pkFUyN9AmcJkHhKJfJZssmYGYQ2peLKWCUXLiptuuXk6bNysOnTIXAUgbXMygjIeUcaRhzJTzP9Urp5B97Qz3xSgnz_hnYvuwrtqpgTxvWSRAqSVZcYThNJ4wvKliEYnRbz/s320/100_8679+small.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
That took a few tries too... but once again I settled on a shape and went from there.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwZRhdlNGoeA4iu-SmdlYQScfj9onyiKt_BMEEb9xN9-iH7fqKWM4h1FHWeFGyxFKASXKG6A5k1eCcCZQSqxAHS_ZClxXMrnj2kWRi5VXl5HuoIWmKSEZ-9HebK6MQU8H-4vCqOMKTZqvK/s1600/100_8681+small.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwZRhdlNGoeA4iu-SmdlYQScfj9onyiKt_BMEEb9xN9-iH7fqKWM4h1FHWeFGyxFKASXKG6A5k1eCcCZQSqxAHS_ZClxXMrnj2kWRi5VXl5HuoIWmKSEZ-9HebK6MQU8H-4vCqOMKTZqvK/s320/100_8681+small.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I made a few arms, and eye sockets and then started on the 'easy to design but really hard to execute' suction cups.<br />
<br />
I pinned them on at first, but it was a little stabby.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVV_z9UhXX1YivFF33wGczZ22AjNsr995N1ExOWoTMMYA1AEOgJN30KJD3tPJbiudkLjuHCRSCNpNjluAEGPIsDO4HssSpqNB2m-Qd1pB39gRXtdm1o8U7QrV0GC9o4PPC-9nN43yEUAaW/s1600/100_8684+small.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVV_z9UhXX1YivFF33wGczZ22AjNsr995N1ExOWoTMMYA1AEOgJN30KJD3tPJbiudkLjuHCRSCNpNjluAEGPIsDO4HssSpqNB2m-Qd1pB39gRXtdm1o8U7QrV0GC9o4PPC-9nN43yEUAaW/s320/100_8684+small.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYBp43r1YQ1SPzBV3kIdEA_Mk4ZvdNvty5nku95WhOUGDyGuz5yOVxH4K3RZOHXJOp_bM7JKahjBx3GZkwZKD5N6NMhFkRkD_FrCPfbNxTtZjeyzf34ttYa0aN1J9Tu3aMwVF3EuqEnmTb/s1600/100_8686+small.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYBp43r1YQ1SPzBV3kIdEA_Mk4ZvdNvty5nku95WhOUGDyGuz5yOVxH4K3RZOHXJOp_bM7JKahjBx3GZkwZKD5N6NMhFkRkD_FrCPfbNxTtZjeyzf34ttYa0aN1J9Tu3aMwVF3EuqEnmTb/s320/100_8686+small.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
So I started putting them on kind of free-form. And when I realized how long it was taking me to make them and sew them on, I put them on a lot more sparsely.<br />
<br />
At this point it was the night before the deadline and I was feeling the pinch (and the stiffness in my hands and wrists from overuse)... but once I put those eyes in and pinned it together there was no going back.<br />

Octavia the Octopus is now in the hands of the Stampede people, being judged and readied for the showcase. I saw so many gorgeous photos that others have entered into the show... there is some stiff competition in the photography section. But there was only 11 entries (when I dropped mine off ) in my section of Fibre Arts, Original Design, so that's good for my chances to win something. :)<br />
<br />
But at the very least, I am very proud of myself for making this and that's all that matters.<br />
<br />
If anyone is interested in designing crocheted toys, I'd recommend June Gilbank's <a href="http://www.amazon.ca/Complete-Idiots-Guide-Amigurumi/dp/1615640037/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1342036361&sr=8-1" target="_blank">The Complete Idiot's Guide To Amigurumi</a> ... it has great advice.<br />
<br />
So, on to getting ready for my next trade show (August 4, Grandstand Room, Stampede Grounds), doing a few items that people have requested, and waiting to see if I've won anything. :)<br />
Oh, and getting ready for the Ravellenic Games... I'm team co-captain for Team PlanetJune. I have decided to learn a new (to me anyway) crochet technique called Tunisian Crochet... it should be interesting. And I have a shawl to complete for Team VF.Chrisiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755562287677532073noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8675770610038798275.post-84571315879791816412012-06-19T13:11:00.000-07:002012-08-12T21:09:24.354-07:00Trade Show PrepI'm working hard to prep for my first official show... here's what I've come up with for my Made To Order sheets.<br />

We visited Joey's family and saw lots of sights, and a highlight for me was finding some cool craft stuff that I can't get in the Hat.<br />
Here's my haul...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxTOW2XIxAXzTDfvsLmDQaRkk69c2A-5wFtOrcl7BIBEkWZSz3K2b4YEov9yg4w85kyz7q9o6IDIODLIwTOAZzFtCQ15CYLvoIAVUHcEap5WMmrxMT-Ivxc_0QzlUtKg0EZ8TJ6NeykARf/s1600/100_8438+edit+small.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxTOW2XIxAXzTDfvsLmDQaRkk69c2A-5wFtOrcl7BIBEkWZSz3K2b4YEov9yg4w85kyz7q9o6IDIODLIwTOAZzFtCQ15CYLvoIAVUHcEap5WMmrxMT-Ivxc_0QzlUtKg0EZ8TJ6NeykARf/s320/100_8438+edit+small.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
From left to right: Needle felting supplies (needles and two bags of felting fibre), Debbie Bliss Lace yarn in a gorgeous blue color, two (50% Fine Merino, 30% Baby Camel Hair, and 20% Kid Mohair) balls of yarn and a shawl pin. In the very middle is a yarn bowl.<br />
Everything but the bowl was from <a href="http://www.ingridsyarn.com/">http://www.ingridsyarn.com/</a>, Ingrid's Yarn & Needlework in Duncan, BC. I made a special trip to that store and I was glad I did. I wanted to get needle felting supplies and she was very knowledgable and helpful so that was great.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqqdp51oQsMXU4qXEx8bhFNw9bw9rQ9SC7XuvQ5j8ilyFmPt9x04TyGrinIXtYij8_zTtkCpeMUgknL6bSJB1876mQuenw4bbjGNnUQPvpWX0oXExJx-S9FW4YNu7SzUyJveQHmEjJdCNZ/s1600/100_8437+edit+small.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqqdp51oQsMXU4qXEx8bhFNw9bw9rQ9SC7XuvQ5j8ilyFmPt9x04TyGrinIXtYij8_zTtkCpeMUgknL6bSJB1876mQuenw4bbjGNnUQPvpWX0oXExJx-S9FW4YNu7SzUyJveQHmEjJdCNZ/s320/100_8437+edit+small.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
If you don't know what a yarn bowl is, well... you put your ball of yarn in it and feed your yarn end through the little dip thingie there and then your yarn doesn't roll all over the place. Cool, heh? The only problem is I don't know where to put it so it doesn't get broken... Currently it's sitting on my dresser, home to steampunk fuzzy lamb.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpDY-2oh_kS6YCCX8BFtzVgMW6yaxcLVTOLh0xGTntERidZIPGU5UAqmuxZpDQLQ8kWl-gBzKZwq2se-GjeUa7KaEFODdrp_0aaxEyA38ljAODp6uX3rGashzKB2BHVOjTXK3TNGwYUbNm/s1600/100_8435+small.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpDY-2oh_kS6YCCX8BFtzVgMW6yaxcLVTOLh0xGTntERidZIPGU5UAqmuxZpDQLQ8kWl-gBzKZwq2se-GjeUa7KaEFODdrp_0aaxEyA38ljAODp6uX3rGashzKB2BHVOjTXK3TNGwYUbNm/s320/100_8435+small.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I bought the bowl from a local artist (Barbara Strachan <a href="mailto:bstrac@shaw.ca">bstrac@shaw.ca</a> from her business card), in the store Pyromania Pottery <a href="http://www.pyromaniapottery.ca/">www.pyromaniapottery.ca</a> in Coombs, BC, where they have goats living on the roofs of the stores. Yup, goats. On the roof. Anyway, it was purely a happy coincidence to find a bowl, but it is my favourite purchase. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

The camel yarn is definitely the most exotic, and I hope I can find a good project for it. :)<br />
<br />
I will be putting up lots of pictures of our trip on my Facebook page, but I thought some of my crafty friends would appreciate this.<br />

For those who were counting... just over 4 hours total time spent. :)Chrisiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755562287677532073noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8675770610038798275.post-27909724394988367462012-05-08T14:19:00.000-07:002012-06-07T08:59:51.889-07:00The Anatomy of a Crochet Aardvark: Part Four - All Parts Present and Accounted ForSo I realized just how fragmented my crocheting time is when I was trying to time myself. It's literally three minutes here, 5 minutes there... the only time I really get a good stretch in is when the kids are eating (or sleeping).<br />
<br />
It's Tuesday, and I managed to get the rest of the crocheting done. That's one ear, all four legs and a tail complete.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYtMn7b73u2J1pPWB-DXVdBI3_B0Z0L8PBNnTxpKq3TBzf4mjaODwz-lKuWp1JX7qE8tx-dGnlOijUsP4_mSe76eA8aG0Gms6uavAFCIpX0GHl-JoJiVxJmpE7sYdhBG7047_p5d6HH-EC/s1600/100_8228+edit+small.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYtMn7b73u2J1pPWB-DXVdBI3_B0Z0L8PBNnTxpKq3TBzf4mjaODwz-lKuWp1JX7qE8tx-dGnlOijUsP4_mSe76eA8aG0Gms6uavAFCIpX0GHl-JoJiVxJmpE7sYdhBG7047_p5d6HH-EC/s320/100_8228+edit+small.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And that took 1 hour, 15 minutes.<br />
<br />
All I have left is the assembly, my least favourite part. :/<br />

For me, that's the best part of crafting.<br />
<br />
I got a bit of a start on my aardvark early Sunday...<br />
<br />
Rounds 1-14 done, 15 minutes<br />

<br />
Rounds 15-25, 10.5mm eyes added, stuffing added, 20 minutes<br />
<br />

<br />That's all for Sunday, but Monday is usually a good crocheting day because Isaac has gymnastics. Later!Chrisiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755562287677532073noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8675770610038798275.post-63806452805741301222012-05-06T17:07:00.000-07:002012-06-07T08:59:51.900-07:00The Anatomy of a Crochet Aardvark: Part One - The ToolsIt's been a while since my last blog entry, but I had a brainstorm and just HAD to do this project... I want to show a crochet project from start to finish, pictures and all. <br />
<br />
This is not going to be a tutorial by any means, more of a demystification of the process that takes such basic ingredients as a hook and yarn and makes something with so much personality. <br />
<br />
A great final product has a lot to do with the pattern (and designer)... designing is a mix of art and math. I haven't designed anything but the baby lightsaber, which is basically a big tube, but it's a start. (Side note - the Medicine Hat Stampede and Exhibition has contests for art, and the only category for crochet is the Fibre Arts Original Design... I would love to win, but I have to design something first!)<br />
<br />
For this project I will use a pattern by my favourite designer June (of Planetjune). I love her patterns because they are very well-written, detailed and realistic - everything I would eventually like my designs to be. It is a bonus that she allows (and even encourages) sales of the finished products from her patterns. You can find her patterns here: <a href="http://www.planetjune.com/crochetchrisie">www.planetjune.com/crochetchrisie</a><br />
(Bonus for me: I'm now part of her affiliate program, so if anyone goes through the above link to her shop and purchases something I get a small percentage in shop credit with PlanetJune. Cool!)<br />
<br />
For obvious reasons I can't share the actual pattern, but I can tell you that crocheting required learning something akin to a new language. Everything is written in shorthand, and has a set layout that a good pattern will follow. An average line of a pattern looks something like this:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Rnd 3: (2sc in next st, 1 sc in next st) six times (18)</div>
<br />
Translation ~ round three - two single crochet in next stitch, one single crochet in the next stitch, repeat that stitch pattern six times, end round with 18 stitches total.<br />
<br />
Anyway, that's probably still gibberish to pretty much everyone and if you're still with me - yay! - let's move on. :)<br />
<br />
So what do I need to make this adorable aardvark?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXiEe6lJbeNjoarLQ9XeVbz1AAtWdCozTNSyq58QOCDrT3Sk5I3JAknKynqxLLvxkAmQ0lq2wB7caSzMe-StVtL47t5jmK4Qq7dNCFElvE-56ZN3NTnMSXhNn5kuh5mjCae6giVrN3S66X/s1600/100_8198+edit+small.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXiEe6lJbeNjoarLQ9XeVbz1AAtWdCozTNSyq58QOCDrT3Sk5I3JAknKynqxLLvxkAmQ0lq2wB7caSzMe-StVtL47t5jmK4Qq7dNCFElvE-56ZN3NTnMSXhNn5kuh5mjCae6giVrN3S66X/s320/100_8198+edit+small.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Brownish yarn, a 3.5mm hook, a stitch marker, two 10.5mm safety eyes, scissors, a yarn needle to weave in ends, polyfill stuffing and time!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4_AeJjVk42Ow21BKRkF0SQ9hKeeAP914i8hiRdYAg3LSsoRwlUAk27yCoeHk6m4G1nZXRlo1fzavMekIrcR1_o-mBGCxf5RDLveV_7eDOl4HOb5kEKPOosuTJFDuappmRRUspBrvizf6R/s1600/100_8199+edit+small.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4_AeJjVk42Ow21BKRkF0SQ9hKeeAP914i8hiRdYAg3LSsoRwlUAk27yCoeHk6m4G1nZXRlo1fzavMekIrcR1_o-mBGCxf5RDLveV_7eDOl4HOb5kEKPOosuTJFDuappmRRUspBrvizf6R/s320/100_8199+edit+small.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was going to make this all one big post, but I think it will be more fun if you can follow along as I go. So I'll pause here, and I will try to update you on my progress every day or two. Hopefully this project won't take super-long, but it should be worth a few posts. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Until next time!</div>Chrisiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755562287677532073noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8675770610038798275.post-86028980559523126822012-02-10T08:15:00.000-08:002012-02-10T08:36:20.973-08:00Book Review: "The Magicians" and "City of Fallen Angels"So, I guess I promised a review of "The Magicians" by Lev Grossman.<br /><br />For some reason I thought this book was a YA novel, but it really wasn't. By the time they got to a part with transmorgified fox sex I was pretty convinced this was not for kids. Anyway... the book was interesting. Part Harry Potter (magic school), part Bright Lights, Big City (aimless in the city after finishing school), part Narnia (fantastical world quest)... it was actually broken up into four 'books', because it was a lot of different things. I got a little bored in the middle, so much that I considered putting the book away, but I forged on and it got pretty good again. And if I'd had the next book on hand when I finished this one I would have started the next one right away. But, it took me a lot longer to get through this book than the next book I read... could have been more words in it though. (The font was pretty small.)<br />3 and a half stars out of 5<br /><br />And, I also read the fourth book in the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, "City of Fallen Angels".<br />Not to give too much away to those that may want to start from the beginning of the series, it is a continuation of the previous three. Jace, Clary, Simon, Isabelle and gang continue fighting demons etc. The author does a pretty good job of creating a new 'world' with Shadowhunters (demon fighters) and Downworlders (vampires, fairies, warlocks, etc)<br />According to the back jacket the series is going to be a movie (series) from Sony Pictures, so I guess we'll see about that. Looking for the next Twilight series I guess.<br />The book was fine, good mystery, but like the previous books it felt pretty 'light'. It definitely didn't have all the layers of The Magicians. But that's okay. I'd recommend the Mortal Instruments series to those who enjoy a good supernatural YA read.<br />4 stars out of 5<br /><br />Waiting for me to read, "American Gods" by Neil Gaiman and "A Discovery of Witches" by Deborah Harkness.Chrisiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755562287677532073noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8675770610038798275.post-28105409547709656182012-01-22T13:39:00.001-08:002012-01-22T13:47:31.951-08:00Update to Books I've ReadI finished "Virals" by Kathy Reichs the other day, and I think I'd give it 3-and-a-half to 4 stars out of 5. It had a good mystery and a good story overall, but I just couldn't really lose myself in it. I'm not sure why. I've put a hold on the next in the series "Seizure" I think it's called. I hope that now I'm familiar with the characters that it's easier to relate to them.<br /><br />I started on "Magicians" by Lev Grossman. So far it's really interesting. It has really great reviews, so we'll see. :)<br /><br />I have a few books on hold at the library and I've taken advantage of their new 'shelves' online. You can put books on your 'for later' shelf, so that's what I've been doing. Then when I'm done with the ones I have on hold I can get the others that I'm interested in. I just thought that was a good idea for the library. It's nice to have a list of books to read.<br /><br />Anyway, I'll probably eventually make some sort of list of books I've read or series that I'm interested in. You'll see that it's pretty heavy on the 'urban fantasy' side of fiction. That's just how I roll. :PChrisiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755562287677532073noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8675770610038798275.post-20934391842741375412012-01-13T11:17:00.001-08:002012-01-13T11:37:03.556-08:00Books I've Read Recently<div>I've been reading a bit more recently, and I thought I'd blog a bit about the books I've read.</div><div>Joey (with a little help from me) got me "The Nine Lives of Chloe King" by Liz Braswell for Christmas. It's actually three novels in one volume, so it was pretty hefty. But it was an easy read because it's technically a YA novel. I like to read young adult novels because they are fast and there are a lot of options for the supernatural romance-y types. Did you know teen girls like vampires? Hmmm, me neither. ;) There was a tv series based on the books (same name) on ABC Family last year and it was pretty good. There was a lot of differences though, and I liked both. At least the books were able to finish the larger story.</div><div>So, there's this girl who gets 'cat-like' powers and discovers she's part of an ancient race of cat people. She has boy trouble and school trouble and mom trouble, and also assassin trouble. So, good times basically.</div><div>I give it 4 out of 5 stars. :)</div><div> </div><div>I also started into a 3 novel volume of Buffy books. The first was "Coyote Moon" by John Hornvolt. Buffy novels are tricky because it's hard to capture their 'voices', but this one was set season 1ish, so it wasn't too complicated. Good mystery, easy read...</div><div>3 and a half stars out of 5</div><div> </div><div>Last night I started "Virals" by Kathy Reichs. I'm only a few chapters in but it seems pretty good. This is her first YA novel, she writes the books the tv show "Bones" is based on. I'll let you know how it is. :)</div><div> </div><div>Later all!</div>Chrisiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755562287677532073noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8675770610038798275.post-50526674663344758382011-12-16T07:51:00.000-08:002011-12-16T07:57:16.924-08:00Felt Poinsettia<div><br /><div>So I can't add my latest craft on Ravelry because it's not crochet, so I thought I'd throw up a quick blog post so I can link to it... I'll make a bigger post after Christmas to roundup all of the stuff I made for gifts this year. But this is the one I wanted to show.<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; width: 400px; height: 300px; text-align: center; display: block; cursor: pointer;" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5686755057702775122" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEig4HLAcE4KXLAmDXcIMZrNwsNKdWAdpL4PUVRZs8N0fXPBCfYSjQfxNOiYS1COOVEtgmTtEuCTSqS0Mn39mCFBN9BWzjoXXtIVo-Yf2c4Ptm3Ov6iKY0JYKOWn3e6bLa3LOf8A7YUtZIp-/s400/100_7178.JPG" /></div></div>Chrisiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755562287677532073noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8675770610038798275.post-26803956874358582912011-09-09T16:01:00.000-07:002012-06-07T09:00:34.558-07:00Fall Schedule, Chrisie-style<div>Here are the shows I'll be watching this fall. I think I'm going to try to hold a few until I have a bunch of episodes saved up... lots of my shows work so much better that way. But there's a few (I'm looking at you Vampire Diaries) that I just can't wait to watch.</div><div>Monday</div><div>Castle, How I Met Your Mother (oy, why am I still watching this?), 2 Broke Girls, Mike & Molly, Terra Nova, Gossip Girl, Hart of Dixie</div><div>Tuesday</div><div>Glee, New Girl, Ringer, Covert Affairs (pt2 of summer season)</div><div>Wednesday</div><div>Suburgatory, Happy Endings, Up All Night, Revenge, Psych</div><div>Thursday</div><div>Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice (why am I still watching this too?), The Big Bang Theory, Parks and Rec, Community, Bones, Vampire Diaries, Secret Circle, The Mentalist</div><div>Fridays</div><div>Chuck, Grimm, Fringe, Nikita, Supernatural</div><div>Sundays</div><div>Desperate Housewives, The Good Wife, Homeland, and (I think it's on this night, it's not on the schedule I was looking at) Once Upon A Time</div><div> </div><div>So that's my fall season in a (long listed) nutshell. Happy TV watching! :)</div><div> </div>Chrisiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755562287677532073noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8675770610038798275.post-57088151443096136622011-09-09T13:41:00.000-07:002011-09-09T14:59:07.516-07:00New Fall Shows<div><div>Well, by popular request (ok, two people) here are my picks for the new fall shows this season.</div><div> </div><div>Ringer (CW, Tuesdays) - Sarah Michelle Gellar is back (as twins!). But one of them is dead?! I don't know, but the premise is eerily similar to the currently airing The Lying Game. Oh well, SMG is a good draw for me. Mystery and intrigue and pg-13 nastiness.</div><div> </div><div>Up All Night (NBC, Wednesdays) - So apparently the new comedies really suck this year, and this show is supposed to suck the least. Yup, they didn't say it was good, just that it sucked less than the rest of the crap. Christina Applegate and Will Arnett are new parents who, you guessed it, are 'up all night' I'll give it a shot.</div><div> </div><div>The Secret Circle (CW, Thursdays) - It's about witches, stars Britt Robertson, and is from the same author as The Vampire Diaries. One can only hope it's nearly as good as VD. I love this kind of show, sue me.</div><div> </div><div>2 Broke Girls (CBS, Mondays) - Another comedy. I think it's about 2 broke girls. Yup. Hey, it's 22 minutes of your life... you decide.</div><div> </div><div>New Girl (Fox, Tuesdays) Zooey Deschanel. If you love her, watch this show. If you don't love her, run far away in the other direction. I love her.</div><div> </div><div>Revenge (ABC, Wednesdays) - So, I wasn't going to watch this show about a young woman (Emily van Camp) who goes to the Hamptons for revenge on some rich people... but then I found the pre-air of the pilot online. And I liked it. It's big on mystery and manipulation.</div><div> </div><div>Terra Nova (Fox, Mondays) - End of the world leads to time travel and dinosaurs. This show has been delayed repeatedly to polish and improve on the FX, so hopefully it looks good now (and has a story). I read somewhere that each episode is costing 3 million to make.</div><div> </div><div>Hart of Dixie (CW, Mondays) - I'm a sucker for Rachel Bilson. I don't know if I'll buy her as a doctor, but we'll see.</div><div> </div><div>Suburgatory (ABC, Wednesdays) Girl gets moved to the suburbs, funny stuff happens? I don't know, but I like Alan Tudyk, so I'll give it a shot.</div><div> </div><div>Homeland (Showtime, Sundays) - From press release - 'Homeland is a psychological thriller that tells the story of Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes), a CIA officer battling her own demons, who becomes convinced that the intelligence that led to the rescue of Sgt. Nick Brody (Damien Lewis) a US soldier who had been missing and presumed dead for nine years, was a set-up and may be connected to an al-Qaeda plot to be carried out on American soil.' </div><div> </div><div>American Horror Story (FX, Wednesdays) Looks really scary... like pee your pants scary.</div><div> </div><div>Grimm (NBC, Fridays) - Solving fairy tale crimes in our world. Procedural with a twist.</div><div> </div><div>Once Upon A Time (ABC, Sundays) - So, kind of like Grimm, fairy tales bleeding into our world. If I had to pick between the two I would chose Once Upon a Time, because Jane Espenson is a writer (head writer maybe?) and she writes on shows I really like (Buffy, BSG, Torchwood etc)</div><div> </div><div>Hell on Wheels (AMC, Sundays) A western on AMC. Should be good. I still miss Deadwood.</div><div> </div><div>OK, I think that's all for new shows. My full schedule to follow. :)</div></div>Chrisiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755562287677532073noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8675770610038798275.post-72796932305229757062011-04-30T17:39:00.000-07:002011-04-30T17:53:39.544-07:00More Crochet CreationsHey all! I guess life got in the way of writing about life. That's probably a good sign, I guess. I've had a few ideas for blog entries floating around in my head that I'll hopefully get to in the next little while, but here's what I've been working on while I could've been blogging.</div><div><br /> </div><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1fjt8SetZ5PaDwAgCShfUjidWTgUgKa_koX8NIXI_NIiRiMzXC1yErEnAa4jIZUei5PIoeo5BuEyNU743X4b20gh46l_Y2pxKWJHVvdcV8dRwaiCxcw4v0vSDofRiFUIYzmLxirSP9x1p/s1600/100_5297.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 150px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 200px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5571396433785277378" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1fjt8SetZ5PaDwAgCShfUjidWTgUgKa_koX8NIXI_NIiRiMzXC1yErEnAa4jIZUei5PIoeo5BuEyNU743X4b20gh46l_Y2pxKWJHVvdcV8dRwaiCxcw4v0vSDofRiFUIYzmLxirSP9x1p/s200/100_5297.JPG" /></a>Crochet! I know, it sounds like something Grandmas do... making doilies and afghans and baby blankets (and they do of course!), but there is a huge resurgence among us younger folk. My Grandma passed away in September and I asked for her hooks and have been 'hooked' ever since. I borrowed every book in the library and also found a wealth of stuff on the internet. Yay for the internet! And of course my Mom has been a huge help... she is super-awesome at crocheting. I never thought I could do it, but here I am. A Japanese style of crocheting (and sometimes knitting) cute toys, usually made in a continuous spiral. Anyway, I won't bore you with the details, but here's a few of the projects that I've finished. I made the bear for Isaac and the bunny for Katie. They have the special safety eyes I had to special-order and wait for, so these two sat around for a while without their heads on. Because Isaac can't have most Easter goodies, I thought I'd make crochet eggs that he can hunt for. And I also made the basket.</div><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div>I'm working on a mobile for Katie's room right now and it should be super-cute, but like most ami-stuff it has really little pieces to sew together, so it's actually taking longer than some of the bigger things. Oh well, it should be really cute.</div><div> </div><div> </div><div>Anyway, it's been a great outlet for me. I've searched all my life for something that lets me be creative, but also follows a pattern because sometimes I'm creatively-challenged. And eventually I'll probably start making my own patterns, so that's cool. So, yup, I'll be the grandma making the afghans and baby blankets. One can hope. :)</div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>Chrisiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755562287677532073noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8675770610038798275.post-32649752753678976982010-12-22T11:27:00.000-08:002010-12-22T11:57:24.033-08:00Winter TV ~ New and ReturningThe winter TV season is starting up soon... so here's what I'm looking forward to this year.<br /><br />New<br /><br />Episodes - Jan 9 (Showtime) A British couple brings their hit show to America... Matt LeBlanc plays a version of himself. Looks funny in a meta kind of way.<br /><br />The Cape - Jan 9 (NBC) Superhero! Summer Glau! Need I say more?<br /><br />Off The Map - Jan 12 (ABC) Shondra Rhimes (Grey's Anatomy creator) brings young sexy doctors to remote jungle-place. Caroline Dhavernas (Wonderfalls) is in it! Yay! Doctors fighting malaria! Double yay!<br /><br />Being Human - Jan 17 (Syfy) While I generally loathe american remakes of british shows, I tried watching the british version of Being Human and I think I could like the american version.<br />A vampire, a werewolf and a ghost are roommates.<br /><br />Returning<br /><br />Pretty Little Liars - Jan 3 (ABCFamily) Big hit of last summer, it's back with the last half of the season. Dirty secrets, guilty pleasure.<br /><br />Parks and Recreation - Jan 20 (NBC) I just started watching this show, but it's pretty funny. Kind of like The Office, but less annoying characters.<br /><br />Royal Pains - Jan 20 (USA) - One of several USA shows I watch... mostly summer-type fare.<br /><br />Well, I guess that's it. I won't be hurting for shows to watch, because most of the fall shows aren't taking super-long breaks this year. (Except Sanctuary - April - APRIL!)<br />Anyway, happy TV watching!Chrisiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755562287677532073noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8675770610038798275.post-49037571023452735092010-09-11T18:05:00.000-07:002010-09-11T18:23:52.207-07:00Fall TV ~ What I'm WatchingThe leaves are turning colours (already) and even though we haven't had much of a summer, fall is indeed upon us. I actually really like fall, despite the fact that winter follows shortly after. I like boots and cozy sweaters (and school supplies - I know I'm a little strange), but mostly I like fall because of the new fall tv season! And oh boy, what a season! I am not going to have enough time to watch everything right away, but there are a few shows I think I'll be watching as soon as they finish on my computer. So, here's the daily breakdown of what I'm going to try to watch this year, and how excited I am for each show.<br /><br />Monday<br />Chuck - 'must-see'<br />How I Met Your Mother - wait until I'm bored (does that ever happen anymore?)<br />Gossip Girl - middle of the pack<br />Mike & Molly - new show with some promise<br />Lone Star - new show as well - has had good reviews<br />Castle - 'must-see'<br /><br />Tuesday<br />Glee - 'must-see'<br />No Ordinary Family - I've watched the pilot - liked it a lot - will watch quickly<br />Life Unexpected - middle of the pack<br />The Good Wife - middle of the pack<br />Sanctuary - 'must-see'<br /><br />Wednesday<br />Cougar Town - 'must-see' (it's a good show, ok - don't judge me)<br />Hellcats - middle of the pack, but it's already airing, so I'll probably watch it right away at first because nothing else is on<br />Terriers - same as Hellcats<br /><br />Thursday (holy moly Thursday is busy)<br />The Vampire Diaries - 'must-see' Soooo good<br />The Big Bang Theory - 'must-see'<br />Community - 'must-see'<br />Bones - 'must-see'<br />30 Rock - middle of the pack<br />Grey's Anatomy - middle of the pack<br />Nikita - good new show - still middle of the pack<br />The Mentalist - middle of the pack<br />Private Practice - middle of the pack<br />Burn Notice - 'must-see', at least until I see how the cliffhanger resolves (but doesn't start back up until Nov)<br /><br />Friday<br />Smallville - middle of the pack (probably should watch the season finale)<br />Human Target - middle of the pack<br />Medium - middle of the pack<br />Supernatural - 'must-see'<br /><br />Sunday<br />Desperate Housewives - is this still going? Oh yeah, Brian Austin Green - still middle of the pack<br />Boardwalk Empire - should be good - probably still middle of the pack<br />Walking Dead - starts Oct 31, probably watch the first one right away<br /><br />Also, if anyone was wondering about the SyFy movie Red with Felicia Day it's airing Oct 30.<br /><br />S0 that's my breakdown of the new season. The official start of the fall season is September 20. Happy tv watching!Chrisiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755562287677532073noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8675770610038798275.post-17742558890906158912010-09-06T17:38:00.000-07:002010-09-06T18:07:38.729-07:00GrandmaToday we said goodbye to a special person in my family... It was a sad day, but also a time to reflect on the many ways she shaped our lives. I believe that she is at peace now, after struggling these past couple months.<br /><br />I have so many fond memories of my Grandma. I spent a lot of time at her house when I was a kid. When we lived in Dunleath, I would go over there sometimes before and after school while my parents were at work. And after we moved to Medicine Hat I spent several summers at their house, before they moved to the Hat too. Those summers were the most fun... my cousins would come out and we would go camping, bottle picking, or maybe go to town to the mall. But before the boys came, I mostly hung out with Grandma. We'd play games, or do puzzles, make donuts... or even burn garbage. She could make anything fun. One time we tried to make paper like I saw on tv... it didn't work, but it was still fun. I have such vivid memories of those times, and I'm so thankful for that.<br /><br />Grandma... I hope you knew how much I loved you and how much you meant to so many people. You're with the angels now... rest in peace.<br /><br />Love, your granddaughter. @-}-Chrisiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16755562287677532073noreply@blogger.com0
